Character Design - In class activities

For this exercise I was given Ancient Egypt, and I had to draw weaponry, furniture and clothing for this time period. For the bottom half I had to exaggerate their characteristics. I mainly did this with their scale.

Before drawing my character from life, I looked at other animals to draw from life. This helped get an idea of skull shapes and the facial structures.

In this class activity, I was given Inside Out to look at, and draw the characters from in terms of their shapes and overall structures.

The next task was to create a character that might belong in the same movie. I chose curiosity as a feeling to base on. I started by shaping the character like a question mark, from this arching back. I then took a different route of designing the character as an explorer, to embody their curiosity and call for adventure.

I was given Bran Castle in Romania to look at and then draw. I had to add character to the structure to give it emotion. I gave it sharp and crooked edges to create a darker feeling, as if the castle is hazardous.

I was given 40's gangsters to create an environment from. The first one I sketched was an office. I used a large chair to communicate the idea that it belongs to a big/important character.

The second one I did was of a pier, which has a man standing at the edge looking over the sea. The moonlight is shining on him, casting a large shadow. This shot is meant to be following a character with guilt and regret.

For this activity we were put into small groups, and we had to take turns in posing for short amounts of time. The aim was to capture the body language well and use it to communicate the character's traits/actions.

In class, we were given a pair of expressions in which we had to use. What we had to do was show a transition from one emotion to the other. I had grief and terror. For the other activity I had to put an expression into a church. I decided to use the structure's features to resemble a face, and I used the front door to symbolize a baby's mouth and pacifier.

For this class activity, I was given World War 2 as a theme to create a world futuristic space. I decided to create a villain with a flame thrower, and tried incorporating the helmets and gas mask into the uniform's design.
